I only have 3 absolute requirements and a couple preferred but not absolutes.

Manual.

Nothing in red

Fun to drive.

Some sort of practicality, aka rear seats, decent trunk. I would like to be around 6K, Before you all shout Miata, I already have one. I was looking for a Focus SVT, but there isnt any good ones in this area.

Hate to say it but maybe a Civic Si coupe or hatch? Otherwise, 3rd or 4th gen GM f-bodies. Cheap V8 manual goodness.

If you do the work yourself, they're not that bad.

You should be able to find an Impreza 2.5RS for that budget. They're pretty indestructible (except for the head gaskets).

If you want fun, and practicality, you can go the M5 route (where I'd go personally), OR enter the land of the hot-hatch.

E36s are great. It helps to have someone around who is well versed in German cars and their occasional, er, oddities. The nice thing is that the BMW forums are filled with information. E36 was also, in my opinion, the last model before all the new high tech stuff made maintenance a major headache

I would agree here! But the 8th Gen at $6k probably isn't realistic. And I think 8th Gen is really where its at (Also, for a Sedan 8/9th gen are the only choices)

The 2.5RS is awesome. I will second that.

I have a friend who has a pontiac g8 which he loves.

an civic? lol no seriously. You just have to make sure you buy one from an old man, and not a kid with a snap back.

If you want a family car(which I doubt you do) a camry or a corrala S possibly. I don't know they pricing for a corolla S but I'm sure you could find a camry for 6k

What I really want right now is a yugo. I swear I'm going to try and get one.

a scion tc. it's basically the spiritual successor to the Toyota celica, so it has a good bit of sport to it. you can probably find a decently low miles one for 5-6 grand (at least that's what i found in my area)

If looking new or newish, perhaps a Mk6 Golf, either the 2.5 or the GTI.

We have the 2.5 in our fleet and they're very impressive. Close your eyes and you'd swear your driving an Audi A3. That 2.5 motor is almost overpowered for the car.

Handling is quite good. Not as poised as some of its more expensive Germany brothers and cousins, but pretty damn close. Has handling limits I feel I have not even come close to approaching. If I could take any vehicle in our North American fleet to a trackday, the 2.5 Golf would probably be it.

It's also made in Germany, as oppose to...somewhere else that isn't Germany.

And like all Golfs since the Mk1, it has gobs of practicality as a 4-door hatch that's good on gas and small enough to work in urban environments.

Last reason: price. Something like $20k for the vanilla version, and $24 for the Wolfsburg. And as the Mk7 Golf is arriving soon, dealers will soon want to get rid of all the previous models: can expect heavy discount if you're willing to do the legwork and haggling.

I still don't trust veedub's long term reliability, so if you get a new one, I'd do what many modern VW owners seem to do - sell it when the warranty expires :P

Volvo Turbo Wagon.

Also, some "fair" Mazdaspeed6s, RX-8s, and Volvo S/V60Rs can be had in the $6K range.

They're really not that bad if you take care of them. Parts are expensive as hell though, so if you get one, make sure it's good. e39s are stupid cheap right now. You can get a really good late-model one for 6 grand. That's what I'd do if you already have a dedicated hoon mobile in the stable. I honestly think the e39 528/530 is the best car ever made for pure DD duty.

The only V60Rs I can find in that range are beat to hell. There is a pristine one semi-local that is flawless for 10K, which sucks because want.

I have some people saying 3 series is the way to go, and now your saying a 5 series. I dont really know much about BMWs.

Same where I live, which is why I still drive a 1990 765 Turbo, and, save some, uh, personality quirks, she's been and is a good vehicular companion for almost seven years now.

For a DD, I prefer the 5 series. It has a huge trunk, and can fit 4 grown ups, which is nice. I've had I think 4 e39s. The one I DDed was a '97 528i with some basic mods (intake, exhaust, pulleys, coilovers) and I used to get around 30mpg highway with it. Sometimes on road trips I would see how high I could get my mileage, and I did over 40 a handful of times. It's very comfortable, practical, plenty of gadgets, still looks great, and handles insanely well for a big sedan. I took care of mine and never had a single major issue until I hit 200k. Worst thing that happened was a cracked radiator neck. You could step up to the 540, which is a sexy beast, but your gas mileage will suffer.

The 3-series is kind of a compromise. It's a bit lighter and shorter, so it's the proper choice for someone with a truck/sedan in the stable or the single-car owner who wants to do some autocross. It's more hoonable than the 5 series, but you give up a bunch of trunk space, and a lot of comfort for your back seat passengers. Still a good choice. I'm DDing an e46 M3 now and I love it, but I find myself missing the extra space pretty frequently. If you get an e46, go 330. The smaller engines aren't exactly under-powered, but you find yourself wanting a little more.

Either way, find a good BMW mechanic and pay the hundred bucks or whatever to have them inspect it before you buy. The problem with used BMWs is that they have been previously owned by BMW owners, so there are a lot of dogs out there.
